Una especie ya poco común que por el grado de amenaza de extinción se encuentra protegida por ley y el comercio de su madera está prohibido. Presente naturalmente desde Nicaragua hasta Ecuador, concentrándose en Costa Rica en las llanuras de la Zona Norte y las el Caribe Norte, en sitios que no sobrepasen los 800 m de elevación. Es una especie que llama la atención por su forma y altura, siendo de los pocos árboles que sobresalen por encima de los demás (dosel); prefiere los lugares planos y no es exigente en cuanto a suelos, ya que puede soportar bien inundaciones a causa de suelos con mal drenaje.

Considerado como un gran árbol que puede alcanzar los 45 m de alto, caracterizado por su recto y limpio tronco que fácilmente puede superar el metro de diámetro, inclusive llegar al 1.5 m si encuentra las condiciones favorables para su desarrollo.

Los pequeños y erectos racimos de flores terminales o axilares se van abriendo de abajo hacia arriba, en donde contrastan los botones de tono verde con el rosado de los pétalos de las flores. Estas flores están formadas por sépalos cafezúscos levemente carnosos y por 6 pétalos redondeados con el borde curveado hacia afuera de color rosado en la parte externa y por dentro blancos. Las abejas que las visitan durante mayo a agosto son las responsables de su polinización.

One of the rarest species that is protected by law for the trade of its wood due to the degree of being in danger of extinction. Present naturally from Nicaragua to Ecuador, concentrating in Costa Rica on the plains of the North Zone and the North Caribbean, in places that do not exceed 800 m elevation. It is a species that attracts attention for its shape and height, being one of the few trees that stand out above the others; prefers flat places and is not demanding in terms of soils, since it can withstand well floods due to poorly drained soils.

Considered as a large tree that can reach 45 m high, characterized by its straight and clean trunk that can easily exceed one meter in diameter, even reaching 1.5 m if it finds favorable conditions for its development.

The small and erect clusters of terminal or axillary flowers open from the bottom to the top, where the green buttons contrast with the pink of the petals of the flowers. These flowers are formed by slightly fleshy brownish sepals and by 6 petals rounded with the curved edge outward pink on the outside and white inside. The bees that visit them during May to August are responsible for their pollination.
