Un árbol que para muchos es bien conocido por formar parte del famoso grupo de maderas preciosas y considerado de altísimo valor económico. Es una especie nativa desde México hasta la parte norte de América del Sur hasta Costa Rica. Puede llegar a alcanzar los 40 m de altura, un tronco bonito, alto, cilíndrico, robusto y grueso que puede llegar al metro de diámetro y siempre desarrollará pequeños camarones en su base.
La corteza es gruesa y de color gris claro, con fisuras verticales largas y profundas que le dan al fuste un aspecto característico. Las hojas son compuestas y extrañas, de unos 15 a 20 cm de largo con 5 o 7 folíolos de color verde intenso muy brillante y un fuerte olor a frijol al exprimirse, que caen al inicio de la estación seca y es entonces cuando aparecen precisamente pequeñas flores amarillas agrupadas en racimos cortos que sobresalen entre las ramas. Los frutos alargados y retorcidos similares a una hoja que emerge entre el follaje dan a los racimos un aspecto muy llamativo. Dentro de cada fruto hay una sola semilla, grande y achatada con apariencia de frijoles.
La hermosa madera de color y aroma caramelo es considerada una madera preciosa no solo por su belleza sino por ser una madera dura, pesada y fuerte.

This is a tree that, for many, is well known for being part of the famous group of precious woods. Its wood is considered to be of very high economic value. It is a native species that is present all the way from Mexico to the northern part of South America. This beautiful tree has a robust, thick and cylindrical trunk and can grow up to 40 m tall. Its trunk can reach a meter in diameter and will always develop small buttress roots at its base.
The bark is thick and light gray, with long and deep vertical fissures that give the shaft a characteristic appearance. The leaves usually come in odd numbers and are about 15 to 20 cm long with 5 or 7 leaflets of very bright intense green color and a strong smell of beans when squeezed. These fall at the beginning of the dry season, and that is precisely the time when small yellow flowers appear grouped in short clusters that protrude between the branches. The elongated and twisted fruits, similar to a leaf emerging among the foliage, give the clusters a very striking appearance. Within each fruit, there is a single seed. This one is large and flattened with the appearance of a bean.
The beautiful wood has the color and aroma of caramel. It is considered a precious wood not only because of its beauty, but also because of how hard, heavy and strong it is.
