Una especie nativa de México hasta Brasil y presente en Cuba, Jamaica y Trinidad y Tobago, el ojoche o como se le conoce en otros países ramón o nuez maya, es simplemente un árbol como muchos otros del bosque, pero lo que no sabe la mayoría de las personas es que su gran importancia como fuente de alimento de alta calidad de información desde la antigüedad, cuando los mismos mayas lo cultivaron en forma amplia alrededor de sus principales ciudades, así mismo el resto de las culturas pre-hispánicas de la región lo consideraban como un símbolo de vida, que inclusive lo plantaban junto a las tumbas de personajes importantes. Gracias a él miles de personas a través de la historia han podido sobrevivir en marcados periodos de sequía y escasez de alimentos, especialmente de maíz, arroz y frijoles, o bien simplemente por ser tan pobres que no podían tener acceso a los alimentos, de ahí que muchos lo han despreciado por considerarlo “comida de pobres” sin tomar en cuenta sus valiosas propiedades nutritivas.

A native tree from Mexico to Brazil and present in Cuba, Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago, the Ojoche or as it is known in other countries “the mayan nut”, it’s considered as a common tree in the forest but what most do not know of people is that its great importance as a source of high quality food information since ancient times, when the Mayans cultivated themselves it widely around its main cities, likewise the rest of the pre-Hispanic cultures of the region They considered it a symbol of life, that they even planted it next to the tombs of important people.
Thanks to it, thousands of people throughout history have been able to survive in marked periods of drought and shortage of food, especially corn, rice and beans, or simply because they are so poor that they could not have access to food, hence that many have scorned it for considering it “poor food” without taking into account its valuable nutritional properties.
